Province code

PO Prato

On Italian plates registered up to 1994, the code PO marks the province of Prato, in Toscana.

What it looks like

Provincial plates used three formats: the code plus six digits, the code with digits and a trailing letter, or the code with a leading letter and five digits.

PO 123456PO 12345APO A12345

Modern plates carry no province code

Since 1994 Italian plates have been sequential nationally: two letters, three digits, two letters, with no geographic reference at all. A modern plate cannot be traced to a province, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing. The code on the blue side sticker, where present, is optional and can be changed by the owner.

Check the vehicle's history

The province tells you where a car was born, not how it has lived. Real mileage, accidents and liens need the VIN.

17 characters. Field E on the registration document, or the base of the windscreen.

  • Vans
  • Motorcycles more limited coverage

The VIN still decodes, but the archives we query hold less history for these vehicles.
